Direct Access Vasectomy
Getting here from Coburg
From Coburg, the most direct route is along Sydney Road north through Coburg North and into Preston, where it connects to Plenty Road. The trip is straightforward by car. By train, the Upfield line runs through Coburg station - you can connect to buses or a short cab ride to reach the Preston clinic.
You cannot drive yourself home after the procedure - please arrange a lift before your appointment.
What the procedure involves
The no-scalpel, open-ended vasectomy at Direct Access Vasectomy works like this:
Local anaesthetic is injected using a fine needle to numb the area
A small 5-8mm opening is made in the scrotum - no scalpel required
The vas deferens is divided on each side through the same opening
The testicular end is left open to reduce congestion
A small tissue layer is placed between the two ends to prevent re-joining
The skin is clipped closed - no stitches
Nothing about your sex life changes. Testosterone, sex drive, erections, sensation and ejaculation are completely unaffected. Sperm makes up less than 3% of semen volume.
The 3-month follow-up
Vasectomy does not take effect immediately. You need around 15-20 ejaculations over 3 months to clear residual sperm from the tubes. At 3 months, a semen analysis confirms the procedure has worked before unprotected sex is safe. The follow-up test at 4cyte Pathology in Kew is bulk-billed - no out of pocket cost.
Backup contraception is essential until that result is confirmed.
